Secret Garden of Changdeokgung, Seoul, South Korea |
Created when Changdeokgung was constructed during King Taejong's reign, the Secret Garden could be accessed from both Changdeokgung Palace and Changyeonggung Palace. During the Japanese invasion of 1592, many of the garden pavilions were destroyed by fire. Restoration work began in 1623 during the reign od King Injo and continued through the reigns of succeeding monarchs, leading to its present appearance.
The Secret Garden of Changdeokgung presents an exeptionally exquisite design. It is adapted to the totpography and contains a garden in every gully. The natural setting was accentuated by minimizing artificial landscaping.
Buyongji, Aeryeonji and Gwallamji ponds and the Ongnyucheon Stream run through the four gullies. The four smaller gardens are more intimate than the wider and more open space, and gradually evolve into more natural settings.
The gaeden back up againts Maebong Peak, the prominent natural land form to the rear of the Secret Garden. Most palace gardens around the world are meant to be seen and enjoyed in a traditional sense; at Changdeokgung's Secret Garden, visitors were meant to experience climbs through the gullies and over ridges.
This secluded area had multiple purposes. It served as a place for the composition of poems, the setting for contemplation, a venue for banquets, and an archery range. Military drills were conducted here in the presence of the king, and the king and queen also engaged in farming and raised silkworms here.
